SEA-TEACHER STUDENT

Hello Buddies

Mabuhay and Selamat Datang

Let me introduce my self, my name is Ersi Irma Anjelita Manu, usually they called Ersi. I am a final year or 4th year student at Universitas Kristen Indonesia as a student of the International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.  Being an International Relations student is a challenge to be able to participate in implementing international programs that have an impact on many people. Sea-Teacher is a program provided for fellow students from the Education study program, but it is a challenge for me whose background is not from the Education study program but International Relations. Since high school I have often joined several communities and also played a role as a teacher or mentor, because for me the world of education is very interesting, so that in International Relations I focus more on the field of education. Getting the opportunity to take part in the Sea-Teacher program is the best opportunity I got to improve my skills in the part of education, and provide an unforgettable experience. This opportunity gave me other doors of opportunity, basically this opportunity was my first time to go and do activities abroad. The program was held form 25th September – 21st October 2023.

Short History

The College of Education started as the School of education (SEd) in 1992, with 44 faculty and 343 students, under the supervision of Dr. Constancia G. Cueno as the first Dean. In 1995, it established a special project, the Child Development Center (CDC) which amitted elementary pupils, which eventually become a laboratory school for BSE and BEE students of the teacher education Department. With the conversion of Don Saverino Agricultural College into a state university, the Cavite State University, in January 1998, the School of Education was then eventually elevated into a Collage of Education. In the same year CDC was formally subsumed under Ced. However, CDC continued to finance its own personal services and other operating expenses. In 2004, Dr. Cecilia B. Banaag was designated as the Dean of Ced. In the current year, CDC was converted into a Science Elementary School and remained a Laboratory School for CEd BEE students.             Teaching System

CDC teaching system follows that of the CvSU Department of Education. They also use the K12 curriculum as the curriculum enforced by the government. Therefore, CDC has 2 learning systems. Effective study days are Monday-Thursday at 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. They also use a teaching schedule, where every day students’ study more than 1 subject with each teacher who is engaged in their field. Each subject is given approximately 1 hour and a 10-15 minute break.  In learning activities, each teacher uses their own way such as using power point to explain the material, then students will actively pay attention and follow the class well from beginning to end, besides that, some teachers use gymnastics videos to liven up the classroom. If there is an assignment given, it can be done online in this case they use LMS, or collected directly and checked manually by the teacher. When focusing on class III, teachers focus more on brief explanations followed by group or individual practice or assignments.

B.     Pedagogical Contents

Teaching methods of the teacher that you observed

The learning method used in the Child Development Center focuses on student activity. In this case, the teacher simply gives a brief explanation, then continues with group discussions and assignments. However, it is a challenge for teachers to make tasks and classroom situations more creative, so teachers always carry out activities that make students understand more and are more knowledge-intensive. In the current learning method, there is a very good mutual relationship between students and teachers. Every teacher is always prepared and required to have a lesson plan and PPT before starting teaching activities.

   Their learning materials and innovation

Since Covid, various innovations have been given to support learning activities. One of them is an online learning platform (e-learning) or what is called a Learning Management System (LMS). This platform is very helpful in managing activities in the classroom. In addition, as in general, we still use books as the main source of learning material. CDC provides many books according to the grade and subjects that are there. In addition to books, materials can also be accessed freely on the internet as additional material if needed.

Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers

The Child Development Center also has very supportive communication and technology, where they have a Computer Laboratory, Science Laboratory, and teachers are required to have electronic learning media such as laptops which of course greatly support learning activities. Each classroom is also equipped with 1 TV and cable that can be connected to a laptop to display Power Point to students. Referring to other things, CDC also continues to provide whiteboards and chalk to help teachers explain in more detail.

Authentic assessment used by the teachers

In this section there are many forms of assignments given to students, such as group discussions. In addition, there are also some quiz such as Spelling Word, then quiz after the material or watching Video.

C.    Teaching Plan

  Curriculum

The curriculum used is K12, as the curriculum provided by the Government.

Teaching plan related to your major

The teaching plan activity is related to my major, where in this case students are required to be more active and creative, but teachers must also be more creative and innovative. This is related to international relations in the field of education, where through this teaching plan can improve the quality of better and more quality education, this can improve and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in point 4. In addition, through teaching planning, it can train to become an international-based educator and be able to contribute internationally.

About Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan

A.    Teaching Practice

                        Procedure of Teaching

Meet with the Teacher Coordinator, then communicate regarding activities while at school with the coordinator teacher.

The first thing to do is to make observations for 1 week, namely in the first week. Observe several classes such as class III and class IV with the teacher coordinator.

Second, make a Lesson Plan and Power Point according to the existing learning material, in this case specifically Subject English.

Third, following the rules and schedules that apply. Here student teachers are given teaching time 4 times each week with many classes, namely 2 classes with a span of 60 minutes / class.

Fourth, the process of learning activities begins with Warm Up (Indonesian Culture, etc.), Review, Vocabulary, Activity, Evaluation/Assement and Further Practice.

                        Time management and organizing activities

Warm Up : 5 Minutes

Review : 5 Minutes

Vocabulary : 10 Minutes

Activity : 15 Minutes

Evaluation : 15 Minutes

Assement : 5 Minutes

Further Practice : 5 Minutes

                        Classroom management

Child Development center, they have various attitudes and personalities, some are very excited because they are learning with a new teacher from another country, but there are also ordinary ones so, the ability to manage classroom activities is very necessary. Because the teaching time is only 60 minutes, I provide interesting activities such as playing cultural videos from Indonesia to attract their attention before class starts. In addition, I also provide several ways to calm the class when the class is getting bored. As for when they collect their assignments and do their work in class, there are some rules that they must follow.

Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

The problem-solving while teaching that I do is with group discussion. I give them a group assignment to solve some tasks where they have to find the correct and appropriate solution and answer to the problem. Like solving puzzles or riddles. Then individually, when I give them the opportunity to write the right answer in front of me or on the blackboard, I can see how they are very enthusiastic about solving the problems.

Summary and Suggestions

Purposes of practicum (meets or does not meet your needs)

1. To gain international contacts and networking

2. Improve teaching skills

3. Improve English language skills

4. Provide experience to adapt and learn new culture and language directly.

5. Gain new knowledge, especially in the field of education.

                        Procedures of practicum

a.                  Procedures from SEAMEO and UKI

Participate in administrative selection (English Test, CV, Transcript of Grades, Recomendetaion latter, Passport)

Interview selection (Readiness to participate in activities and teaching skills test) Follow the preparation week, namely teaching training and making lesson plans  (Microteaching and PKM)

           Procedure from CvSU

Participate in the selection interview with CvSU

Perform activities that have been scheduled by CvSU while at the Destination University.

                    Participate in observation activities.

                    Become a Teaching Assistant

                    Conducting teaching activities

                    Evaluate and create a blog.

                        Outcomes of practicum

A.                Outcomes to Individual

Making student teachers as future teachers who can compete in the international arena with a variety of the latest knowledge with innovation and a much more competent person.

B.                Outcomes to Home University

Making the Indonesian Christian University as one of the universities that has succeeded in creating students who have competitiveness, and introducing UKI to the international arena.

C.                Outcomes to Received University

By providing opportunities to UKI, Cavite State University opens opportunities and cooperation with UKI as a partner to further advance and encourage students to achieve their dreams. In addition, CvSU CDC also gained new knowledge and cultures (Indonesia) provided by student teachers from Universitas Kristen Indonesia.

D.                Outcomes to SEAMEO

SEAMEO became the basis of this program/practicum which helped many student teachers to get their dreams, therefore SEAMEO will be increasingly recognized by many people, especially in the field of education. SEAMEO can be one of the International Organizations that participate significantly for ASEAN in implementing the SDGs.

                        The challenges of practicum

For me, the biggest challenge is how I can connect this practicum activity with my current major, International Relations. I got a lot of challenges to be able to do the tasks that must be done by a teacher starting from making lesson plans, understanding student characters, providing material with creative forms. These challenges make me to continue to try and give my best, so that the knowledge I get can continue to be applied in my life.

                        Overall impression

Overall, this was an amazing opportunity for me. I thought that I did not have enough ability and capacity to participate in this activity, but when I received the Awardee, it made me believe that this is an opportunity to grow. Therefore, during the process of the activity I gained a lot of knowledge, learning, experience, relationships and even things that I don't think I would get anywhere else.

I was shaped here to have a responsible attitude and a more qualified person.

                        Suggestions for future improvement

For SEAMEO, Universitas Kristen Indonesia and Cavite State University, there may still be many shortcomings experienced by the awardees, but continue to develop new innovations for future student teachers, continue to establish good relationships, and continue to collaborate, so that in the future it may not only be within the scope of ASEAN but already on NON-ASEAN resistant.
